How to get to Lanzarote from Italy: flights and tips

Lanzarote is the most scenic of the Canary Islands: lunar volcanic landscapes in Timanfaya National Park, the architecture of César Manrique, pale sandy beaches and vineyards grown in the black lava of La Geria. Getting there from Italy takes a little more planning than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, but the connections exist. Here's how.

Lanzarote's airport

Lanzarote has a single airport: César Manrique — Lanzarote (ACE), near the capital Arrecife, in the central-eastern part of the island. It's convenient for reaching both Arrecife and the main tourist areas:

  • Puerto del Carmen: 10–15 minutes.
  • Costa Teguise: 20 minutes.
  • Playa Blanca (south): 35–40 minutes.

Where you depart from in Italy

Direct connections from Italy to Lanzarote are more limited and often seasonal (mainly winter, the Canarian high season). Depending on the period you'll find direct or seasonal flights from:

  • Milan (Malpensa and Bergamo)
  • Rome (Fiumicino)
  • Bologna and Venice (seasonal)

Typical airlines are Ryanair, Neos and easyJet, but routes change by season: always check the comparison tool to see whether there's a direct flight for your dates. The direct flight takes about 4 hours 45 minutes.

If there's no direct flight from your city, the most common alternative is a stopover in Madrid or Barcelona with Iberia or Vueling, or a flight to Gran Canaria/Tenerife and then an inter-island flight with Binter or Canaryfly (30 minutes).

When it's best to fly

  • Cheaper: May, June, September, October.
  • More expensive: December, January, February, Easter.
  • More direct flights available: winter (when airlines run their seasonal routes).

How to save on the flight

  1. Book ahead: on an island with fewer direct flights, low-cost seats sell out sooner.
  2. Be flexible on the date: midweek costs less.
  3. Compare direct vs stopover: sometimes a stopover in Madrid costs less than a seasonal direct flight in peak season.
  4. Consider hub + inter-island: Gran Canaria/Tenerife + a Binter flight can beat the direct flight when it's out of season.

  • Bus: line 22 and others connect the airport to Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen.

In Lanzarote renting a car is almost essential: the attractions (Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, La Geria) are spread out and public transport doesn't cover them well.
