How to get to El Hierro from Italy: flights and ferries

El Hierro is the smallest, most remote and most authentic of the Canaries: a UNESCO biosphere reserve, an island aiming for energy self-sufficiency, with some of the best diving in the world and slow, genuine tourism. Precisely because it's the least touristy, the connections are the most basic in the archipelago: from Italy you always go via Tenerife. Here's how.

The basic rule: you go via Tenerife

There are no direct flights from Italy to El Hierro. From Tenerife you have two options for the last leg:

  1. An inter-island flight from Tenerife North (TFN) with Binter to El Hierro airport (VDE): about 40 minutes.
  2. A ferry from Los Cristianos (Tenerife South) to the port of La Estaca: about 2 hours 30.

Direct flights from Italy land at Tenerife South (TFS). From here, depending on how you continue to El Hierro:

  • If you take the inter-island flight: you need Tenerife North (TFN), so allow for the TFS → TFN transfer (about 1 hour by car/bus).
  • If you take the ferry: you need Los Cristianos, near Tenerife South (15–20 minutes from TFS). More convenient if you land in the South.

Inter-island flight or ferry?

  • Inter-island flight (Binter from TFN): faster (40 min), but leaves from Tenerife North and has few daily services. Book ahead, seats are limited.
  • Ferry (from Los Cristianos): slower (2h30) but leaves near where you land from Italy and lets you bring the car. Again only a few crossings a day: check the timetable first.

For most travellers landing at Tenerife South, the ferry from Los Cristianos makes the most sense. If instead you have a flight from Italy arriving at Tenerife North, the Binter inter-island flight is the natural choice.

When to go

  • Cheaper and great weather: May, June, September, October.
  • El Hierro is an island for nature and diving, not nightlife: choose the period based on activities (the sea for diving is best from late spring to autumn).

Getting around El Hierro

A small but vertical island, with mountain roads. A rental car is essential: public transport is minimal. Rent in Valverde or at the airport, or bring the car on the ferry.

In short

To get to El Hierro from Italy: a flight to Tenerife, then either a Binter inter-island flight from Tenerife North (40 min) or a ferry from Los Cristianos (2h30). If you land at Tenerife South, the ferry is the most convenient. Book the last leg ahead: services are few. Compare flights to Tenerife on the comparison tool.
