What to see in La Gomera: forests, silbo and viewpoints

La Gomera is the island of silence and ancient forests: a green world of laurel forest, deep valleys, terraces and a whistled language unique in the world. Small, quiet, far from mass tourism. It's the right place to walk and slow down. Here's what to see.

Garajonay National Park

The island's jewel, a UNESCO site: a laurel forest, the vegetation that covered Europe millions of years ago, surviving only here and on a few other islands. Walking among the moss-covered trees, with the mist filtering through the branches, is an experience out of time. Trails for every level. The highest point is Alto de Garajonay (1,487 m), from which on clear days you can see the Teide.

The silbo gomero

La Gomera has a unique cultural heritage: the silbo, a whistled language the islanders used to communicate from one valley to another, spanning distances impossible by voice. It's recognised by UNESCO and still taught in schools. Some restaurants and cultural centres put on demonstrations: hearing it live is astonishing.

San Sebastián de La Gomera

The capital and arrival port: a quiet little town tied to the story of Columbus, who stopped here before crossing the Atlantic. You can visit the Casa de Colón, the church where he prayed, and the well from which, it's said, the water taken to the Americas was drawn. Small but full of character.

The viewpoints and valleys

The island is all ridges and deep valleys, and the viewpoints (miradores) offer non-stop panoramas. The Mirador de Abrante has a glass walkway suspended over the void above the village of Agulo. The Valle Gran Rey, on the west side, is the most touristy area but with an alternative, laid-back kind of tourism, with spectacular terraces dropping to the sea.
