The best beaches in Fuerteventura: the beach paradise
Fuerteventura is the beach island par excellence: the second largest of the Canaries but with the smallest population and the longest stretches of sand in the archipelago. White and golden sand, Caribbean-turquoise water and perfect wind for surfing and kiting. Here are the beaches not to miss.
The Corralejo dunes
In the north, the Parque Natural de Corralejo is an expanse of the finest white-sand dunes running down to a turquoise sea: one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Canaries. Very long beaches, often half-empty even in season. Note: it's a nature park, so no shops or toilets — arrive prepared with water and a parasol. The wind can be strong.
Sotavento and Playa de la Barca (Jandía)
In the south, the Jandía peninsula holds the most spectacular beaches. Sotavento is world-famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing (world championships are held here): at low tide, shallow, warm lagoons form — a sight to see. Playa de la Barca and Risco del Paso are in the same area, with crystal-clear, Maldives-style water.
Cofete: the wild beach
Also in Jandía but on the opposite side, Cofete is one of the wildest and most remote beaches in Europe: kilometres of golden sand battered by the ocean, no buildings, with the mountains behind. It's reached only by a dirt track (a 4x4 is best). The sea is strong and dangerous for swimming, but the setting is unforgettable.
Isla de Lobos
A natural islet off Corralejo, reachable by ferry (a few minutes). Playa de la Concha is a calm, shallow turquoise lagoon, perfect for snorkelling too. Access is capped to protect nature: you need to book a permit online. No cars, no concrete, just nature.
The convenient, equipped ones
- La Guirra (Caleta de Fuste): four bays of real sand, calm even in high season, great for kids and snorkelling.
- The Corralejo town beaches: more convenient than the dunes if you want bars and facilities nearby.
Practical tips
- Wind is the constant: Fuerteventura is windy, perfect for sports but bring a windbreak for the parasol.
- Park = no facilities: at the Corralejo dunes and Cofete there's nothing, bring everything with you.
- Strong currents at Cofete and the ocean beaches: respect the flags, not all are safe to swim.
- Car almost essential: the best beaches are far and poorly served by public transport.
